LCT Announces New Program, The Penguin Project, to Empower Children with Special Needs through Theatre

La Crosse, WI – 05/08/19 – La Crosse Community Theatre announces that informational meetings for The Penguin Project production, Annie Jr., are Monday, June 3, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. and Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. Both informational meetings will be held at the Weber Center for the Performing Arts. Those interested only need to attend one of the meetings.

The Penguin Project was created by Dr. Andrew Morgan and provides children with special needs an opportunity to develop creative skills, partner and network with others, and participate in a fully realized musical production. The Artists, who are children with special needs, will take the stage to perform Annie Jr.

“LCT is incredibly excited to become the 29th Penguin Project replication site for this tremendous nationwide project. We are committed to being an organization that practices inclusiveness. The Penguin Project is a way for us to reach children who may not have opportunities to perform and give them a chance to shine in the spotlight. We believe that The Penguin Project is an opportunity to forge strong relationships in the community between the children involved, as well as between LCT and organizations whose mission is to serve individuals with special needs. We hope that you will consider being a part of the magic that’s created when people from all different walks of life come together to put on a show,” said LCT Producing Artistic Director, Grant Golson.

With equal measures of pluck and positivity, little orphan Annie charms everyone’s hearts despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. Annie is determined to find the parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of an orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan. Annie eventually foils Miss Hannigan’s evil shenanigans, finding a new home in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary, Grace Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy.

Rather than auditions, a screening process based on interest, general abilities, and communication skills will be used to select the cast. All Artists will sing, dance, and act in the show. The Artists will get on-stage assistance from their Mentor. Artists are children and young adults ages 8 to 20 with special needs, including (but not limited to) cognitive, learning, motor, visual, and hearing impairments, as well as genetic and neurological disorders. Mentors are children and young adults ages 8 to 20 who do not have special needs. They will be matched as closely as possible with an Artist of similar age and interests, and the two will work side-by-side through the entire rehearsal and performance process.

The program is made possible through the support of our community partners and is free for all participants. For questions or to sign up, please call the box office at 608-784-9292 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
